The skills that your child will need to enter kindergarten are incorporated throughout the day in playtime, games, arts and crafts, songs, fingerplays, stories and as we interact with one another. We try to use real objects as much as possible. Hands-on learning is best for toddlers and Pre-K.
Because all children learn in different ways and at different stages of their lives, skills are introduced in various ways and often.
When I want to see if we are doing what we need to do, I have a few places I like to look. The Texas Education Agency has a "PreKindergarten Curriculum Guidelines" document on their website. If you would like to see it, go to www.tea.state.tx.us/curriculum/early and look under Documents.
Arlington Alliance of Early Childhood Professionals at www.earlychildhoodprofessionals.org has a set of "Ready For School" brochures for ages 1-4. They also offer a wonderful training workshop once a year.
A great site for toddler and preschool teachers and parents is www.preschoolexpress.com
We play outside for about an hour in the morning and then for another hour in the afternoon (if weather permits). We love to explore and look at things carefully (like bugs, flowers, leaves, or whatever else we find.)
Each morning we have a Storytime that includes reading good books, calendar time, games, songs and fingerplays. We learn the alphabet, colors, shapes, counting and concepts such as opposites, rhyming, etc..We also use props such as puppets and the flannel board. The younger ones do not always stay for the entire Storytime. They are allowed to play quietly while the older ones enjoy more Storytime.
We have an Arts and Crafts time or a table activity (puzzles, playdough, beading, lacing, the proper use of scissors and glue, etc.) each morning.
After lunch we read a book and then take a much needed nap. When we wake up, we have a snack and go outside again.
When we come back in we have another small snack and a story. If we have time we will have another arts and crafts time or a table activity or a game. Not all children are interested in this much guided activity and if they are not, that's okay. They can have free play while those who are interested participate.
We have fun learning together through play, songs, stories and through exploration and discovery. While we play we learn how to take turns, share, and how to speak politely to one another.

The curriculum that I use is a combination of many resources including: Frog Street Press, the wonderful trainings that I have attended, books that I have read, websites for preschool, the Preschool Teachers' Magazine "The Mailbox",ideas from when I worked in Mothers' Day Out, and the many resources I find at Mardels. Some of the songs and crafts are ones that I have come up with, and believe me, you can tell which ones they are.
